"I was the feisty one"

Crazy Al Cayne TV had the opportunity to do a nice video interview with Luciana at the Big Apple Comic Con:

In this video you can see and hear lovely Luciana talk about Caprica and how Battlestar Galactica keeps continuing in a way because of the conventions. She also states that New York is her favorite city ever and she would love to book a series there. Plus, you get a look at some of the photos available for autographs at her table.

Dressing up as Louanne Katraine

While Aaron Douglas chose to dress up as Chief Galen Tyrol last weekend, Luciana did not go as Kat. Instead, she crashed a Halloween party in the guise of Shakira! (Heh, this reminds me of a fellow German who saw a picture of Luciana and thought it showed Shakira. I wonder if that happened before.)

Fortunately, there is someone who did dress up as Louanne “Kat” Katraine this year – this woman! She and her friends all dressed up as characters from Battlestar Galactica when they attended Romics 2009 in Italy last month. Fantastic! This has got to be a first. View more pictures here at Flickr.

Comic News Insider interview

Jimmy of Comic News Insider did an interview with Luciana at the Big Apple Comic Con. He got the chance to talk to her Battlestar Galactica co-stars Aaron Douglas and Michael Hogan as well.

You can download the interview from their website. The interview with Luciana begins about one hour and one minute into the file and lasts for about five minutes.

Aaron Douglas’ segment begins 32 minutes into the podcast and Micheal Hogan’s at about 49 minutes.

There is not really any new information in this interview, but it’s very nice to hear Lucci talk. How she foundĀ  out about Kat’s death is the main topic, and she also chats about about Caprica.

November anniversaries

On the first of each month, we look back at TV premieres, appearances at conventions, and other key dates in Luciana’s public life that occurred this month one or more years ago.

Luciana at the Crossroads convention

Luciana at the Crossroads convention

In November, several BSG episodes with Kat premiered, and Luciana attended her second convention in Europe:

  • November 8,2004: This was a very special day – the day that started it all, in a way. It was the first time that Luciana’s most interesting character to date was seen on TV, because her very first BSG episode, “Act of Contrition”, premiered on the British channel Sky One, introducing Kat to the series. (Battlestar Galactica section at the fansite)
  • November 3 and 17, 2006: The episodes “Torn” and “Hero” of Battlestar Galactica air.
  • November 9-11, 2007: Luciana attends the Wolf: Crossroads convention. It’s her first (and, so far, only) con in Germany, and her second one in Europe after the Utopia 8, which had been held just three weeks earlier. Both editors of this blog were there as well and have very fond memories of the event. :-) (Crossroads con at the fansite, with pages for reports, photos and other goodies)

Board game: Come play with Kat

You’ve probably seen all kinds of Battlestar merchandise over the years. But did you know there’s a also a board game based on the show? Published by Fantasy Flight Games a year ago, Battlestar Galactica is a complex, collaborative game that’s been widely praised for its wonderful design, its attention to detail, and its gripping game mechanics.

I once had the pleasure of playing this game with a bunch of buddies from Caprica City – and let me tell you, it was the most exciting board game experience I ever had! It’s amazing how all the various parts of the game capture the paranoid and hectic atmosphere of the first season so incredibly well. Accusing other players of being Cylon saboteurs, fearing the next raider attack or seeing our resources dwindle, some of us were literally sweating.

There’s one downside, however: Kat is not among the characters that people can choose to play.

Fortunately, Fantasy Flight Games recently published Pegasus, a game expansion that includes a new Kat character sheet, among many other interesting additions. Here’s the sheet:

I have yet to play the expansion, but this sheet looks pretty good. The skills seem spot on, as goes for the special abilities. If you ever get around to purchasing both the basic game and the expansion, we’d love to hear what playing Kat feels like!

Fanvid of the month: Learn to Crawl

Speaking of the Kat/Kara scenes in “Scar”: Many of those electrifying moments feature prominently in an amazing fanvid that I found recently.

Vidded by jarrow, “Learn to Crawl” centers on the rocky relationship between Galactica’s Top Guns.

This is an idea I had years ago when first vidding BSG femslash, but I knew I wasn’t ready to make it yet. [...]

To comment on the source, it was such a treat to have actual eyesex to work with instead of having to construct my own. I appreciated that. And them being all up in each other’s faces. And loving golden showers. Thank you, Starbuck and Kat, for boinking for 3 seasons and letting me watch.

…and thank you, jarrow, for this wonderful fanvid! Oh, the eysex… You, gentle readers, can find a download link and some more comments at jarrow’s LiveJournal. And don’t hesitate to let her or us know what you think!

By the way, “Learn to Crawl” is actually a sequel to jarrow’s “Falling From the Sky“, another impressive Kara-centric fanvid featuring lots of Kat scenes from season1 and 2. That video is a “deeper look at the many pilots Starbuck has failed, including herself”. You can download “Falling From the Sky” and read jarrow’s extensive notes on many of the video’s aspects here at her LiveJournal. Highly recommended!

Stills from Battlestar, season two

I don’t know about you, but whenever I watch “Scar”, I lose myself in all the dramatic tension created by Kat and Kara’s rivalry. The emotional intensity of Luciana and Katee’s scenes is so stunning and overwhelming. What an amazing episode!

Hence, I’m very happy still photographer Carole Segal took so many pictures featuring Luciana as soon-to-be Top Gun, Louanne “Kat” Katraine. And I’m even more happy that 13 of those stills are now available as large and watermark-free pictures:

Oh, the expressions!

Unfortunately, there are no Kat stills from any other season 2 episodes, not even from 2.08 “Final Cut”. This is most likely due to the fact that “Final Cut” and Dr. Dolittle 3 were shot at the same time, so Luciana had to shoot all her demanding scenes in one single day. Unbelievable…

P.S.: We’ll post hi-res stills from season 3 – most notably from Luciana’s final episode, 3.10 “The Passage” – later this year.

Kat action figure: Stim Junkie edition

I’m very happy that the official Kat action figure, which was based on her final scene in “Scar” and hit the shelves two years ago, turned out so exceptionally well. Still, I sometimes wish there were more Kat figures, modeled on other poses or scenes – such as the towel scene in “Final Cut” or one of her boxing moves in “Unfinished Business”.

That’s why I was so excited when I saw the custom-made, one-of-a-kind Kat action figure crafted by the very talented Sasha Powell (a.k.a. MsBigPileofDust):

Now doesn’t that look fantastic? “Remorseful Kat in sickbay” is actually one of my favorite Kat scenes. And oh, the curly hair! Sasha really did a wonderful job with this Stim Junkie. Here’s the description:

I used a Grindhouse Dakota figure with Lost Sun legs and a Kat head. I sculpted her hospital gown and curly hair.

I painted her to look more like Kat. She’s looking wan from her addiction. She has a syringe and a black stand with a peg to keep her steady.

Sasha sold the figure on eBay, and I’m hoping it’s in good hands. “Stim Junkie Kat” is not the only figure she made, of course. You can view pictures of dozens of amazing, custom-made, unique figures – based on characters from Battlestar Galactica and many other productions – on her website.

Some of the figures are currently for sale. Sasha also let me know that she takes commissions – so if you’d love to have a one-of-a-kind figure modeled on, say, “Captain Kat in Duty Blues”, this is your chance to make it happen.

Speaking of alternate Kat figures: Erin Coplan from Propworx turned the official Kat figure into a very special Variant Kat. Also, another unpainted Kat figure popped up on eBay.

Kat left an impression...

It’s been almost three years since the last BSG episode with Luciana as Kat aired, but Luciana is still visiting many conventions (now more than ever, actually), and Kat is still discussed in the blogs, and not just this one here.

Recently ahkna’s blog featured several “female interaction” picspams, where, next to lots of screen caps, memorable and remarkable scenes featuring only female characters were discussed. Three of them are scenes of Kat and Starbuck.

One of Luciana’s most memorable scenes from “The Passage” is a subject of this blog entry, and while there are many pretty pictures, what ahkna has to say about the scene is the really good part:

Why I Love This Scene: The emotions on Luciana Carro’s face. That’s it. She’s angry, she’s broken, she’s everything. Just like the scene from ‘Scar’ when Kat wouldn’t stop riding Starbuck in her moment of weakness, Kara can’t let Kat go, threatening her. These girls like having something they can hold over each other, little things that they can clutch on to in order to avoid looking at each other and just seeing a mirror”

What most Luccinatics really love about Luciana are her many facial expressions and the range of emotions she can portray, and I’m glad we were not the only ones who noticed that talent. Also, the assessment of the characters is pretty much dead on.

Even better, a scene with Kat made it into the top three (well, top two actually) in this post, and again ahkna has thoughtful words to accompany the screen caps:

“Luciana Carro does some really amazing acting and it’s great to see someone challenge Starbuck, especially someone considered an “underling”. Kara is out of line and no one, even Lee, won’t call her on it but Kat has come into her own, has turned into a caring leader and top pilot and won’t take Kara’s issues, especially if they’re going to cost lives.”

This is something I can wholeheartedly agree with. Many people fail to see Kat’s motivations and complain about her “bitchiness” more than about Starbuck’s recklessness which leads to the death of some fellow pilots. Kat’s no saint and she didn’t handle everything in the best way possible, but she stood up to Starbuck when the lives of her comrades were at stake.

Finally, the first of these picspams includes Kat’s death scene.

You may also want to read descriptions of the rest of these scenes in ahkna’s picspams, they show the many diverse and strong female characters that were a very intriguing aspect of Battlestar Galactica.

Shooting Battlestar wasn't glamorous

William McCanless from CoastalEmpire.com let us know he interviewed Luciana at Dragon*Con. And what a nice little interview it is! Luciana compliments William on his footwear, recalls the unglamorous days of shooting Battlestar, and she’s happy to work on yet another “amazing show”.
