We regularly post links to the latest fanvids and wallpapers, but actually there is another popular kind of fan art that people make from pictures and videos of Luciana — icons (or avatars). Mostly sized 100 by 100 pixels, icons are often used as profile pictures at LiveJournal or message boards.
Our own icon archive contains more than 100 stylistically and thematically diverse icons created by a dozen artists between 2005 and early 2009.
More recently, GeekByNight has certainly been the most productive creator of icons made from pictures of Kat or Luciana. She usually posts her works at CigarsGalore, a LiveJournal community exclusively dedicated to icons.
A few days ago GeekByNight posted a fantastic selection of 60 Kat/Luciana icons in one single entry, including a dozen icons made from photos of Luciana at Dragon*Con. View them all!
Speaking of the Kat/Kara scenes in “Scar”: Many of those electrifying moments feature prominently in an amazing fanvid that I found recently.
Vidded by jarrow, “Learn to Crawl” centers on the rocky relationship between Galactica’s Top Guns.
This is an idea I had years ago when first vidding BSG femslash, but I knew I wasn’t ready to make it yet. [...]
To comment on the source, it was such a treat to have actual eyesex to work with instead of having to construct my own. I appreciated that. And them being all up in each other’s faces. And loving golden showers. Thank you, Starbuck and Kat, for boinking for 3 seasons and letting me watch.
…and thank you, jarrow, for this wonderful fanvid! Oh, the eysex… You, gentle readers, can find a download link and some more comments at jarrow’s LiveJournal. And don’t hesitate to let her or us know what you think!
Kara and Kat have a tactical discussion
By the way, “Learn to Crawl” is actually a sequel to jarrow’s “Falling From the Sky“, another impressive Kara-centric fanvid featuring lots of Kat scenes from season1 and 2. That video is a “deeper look at the many pilots Starbuck has failed, including herself”. You can download “Falling From the Sky” and read jarrow’s extensive notes on many of the video’s aspects here at her LiveJournal. Highly recommended!
Now is the time to show you this month’s wallpaper calendar (and wallpaper without calendar), as always created by our friend Cassie. This time she used this wonderful photograph from the sunday panel of this year’s Dragon*Con.
Lucci looks particularly lovely in this photo, so it sure won’t hurt having her beautiful face as a desktop background. ;-)
Clicking on the above images will lead you to their respective pages on Cassie’s website, where you can download the full sized versions or browse the rest of Cassie’s large gallery containing her Jamie Bamber and Battlestar Galactica fan art.

I’m very happy that the official Kat action figure, which was based on her final scene in “Scar” and hit the shelves two years ago, turned out so exceptionally well. Still, I sometimes wish there were more Kat figures, modeled on other poses or scenes – such as the towel scene in “Final Cut” or one of her boxing moves in “Unfinished Business”.
That’s why I was so excited when I saw the custom-made, one-of-a-kind Kat action figure crafted by the very talented Sasha Powell (a.k.a. MsBigPileofDust):
Custom-made Kat action figure by Sasha Powell
Now doesn’t that look fantastic? “Remorseful Kat in sickbay” is actually one of my favorite Kat scenes. And oh, the curly hair! Sasha really did a wonderful job with this Stim Junkie. Here’s the description:
I used a Grindhouse Dakota figure with Lost Sun legs and a Kat head. I sculpted her hospital gown and curly hair.
I painted her to look more like Kat. She’s looking wan from her addiction. She has a syringe and a black stand with a peg to keep her steady.
Sasha sold the figure on eBay, and I’m hoping it’s in good hands. “Stim Junkie Kat” is not the only figure she made, of course. You can view pictures of dozens of amazing, custom-made, unique figures – based on characters from Battlestar Galactica and many other productions – on her website.
Some of the figures are currently for sale. Sasha also let me know that she takes commissions – so if you’d love to have a one-of-a-kind figure modeled on, say, “Captain Kat in Duty Blues”, this is your chance to make it happen.
Speaking of alternate Kat figures: Erin Coplan from Propworx turned the official Kat figure into a very special Variant Kat. Also, another unpainted Kat figure popped up on eBay.

Luciana’s longtime fan SamStarEagle (who kindly shared this story with us on the fanboard) finally had the chance to meet her at last week’s Dragon*Con in Atlanta, and for this special occasion he had a wonderful present for her: An incredible piece of fan art which he had painted himself:
SamStarEagle presents Luciana with his wonderful painting
It is a one of a kind piece of art. It’s no print, and there are no digital copies. There is only the single original, which is now owned by Luciana.
And this is how the very talented artist describes his creation:
“In detail, she’s in the center, flanked by scenes from her Raptor in The Passage, her Viper taking out Scar in Scar, and a beauty shot of her MKII Viper against a nebula…and the brilliant light behind her represents her transcending her physical existence into Elysium where all the Humans in BSG go…”
SamStarEagle always wanted to meet Luciana in person, and this encounter certainly was rewarding for both him and Luciana:
“I actually made something for her in advance of coming there, and while waiting to get checked in Thursday evening, I *thought* I recognized somebody that had just gotten there with a small group…I kept looking and sure enough, it was her. I’d been wanting to meet her for…like, ever since I first saw her on BSG, but I instantly also noticed just how small she is in RL, and also being a guest that was just getting there, I seriously didn’t want to freak her out by thinking she was getting mobbed before the Con even started ( lol) So I very, very carefully went over and remarked “I know you from T.V., right?” , and she politely said yes, so I told her I’d made something for her. She smiled and came over to where I had my bags, and I pulled out the painting I’d made for her carefully keeping it turned around and gave it to her. She took it, took one look at it, gasped outloud and almost followed her jaw to the floor, then looked back at me and looked for a second like she might tear up and told me “thank you” for it and gave me a hug. Apparently she loved it. Heehee…”
Isn’t this an incredible story? You can read the rest of his report here on the fanboard, it’s worth reading. There you can of course also comment on the painting and discuss Dragon*Con in general.
The new month wouldn’t be complete without the wallpaper and calendar by our friend and fan artist Cassie. This time they are not about Lucci at conventions or a dream holiday with her, instead they show Luciana in her most prominent role. These beautiful photos from “Exodus” show Kat the way we remember and love her, and Cassie did an excellent job combining two of them in her latest creations.

Like every month, Cassie has created a shiny new wallpaper calendar, and of course a pure wallpaper version without calendar. This time, she used two beautiful photos of Luciana’s recent appearance at the San Diego Comic-Con.
Now who wouldn’t want this lovely smile as his desktop background?
